$745M Police Academy Opens

The ribbon has officially been cut on the $745 million New York City Police Academy, a state-of-the-art 720,000-square-foot training complex in College Point, NY.

The complex consists of a 350,000-square-foot academic building with classrooms, library space, and administrative and faculty offices; a 240,000-square-foot physical training facility with a running track and a special tactical gymnasium as well as a central utility plant; and other facilities such as a muster court (where cadets gather for roll call, march instruction, etc.). It has the capacity to serve 2,000 recruits and “in-service” officers at one time.

More than 365 contractors worked on the project and the building has a LEED® Silver certification. the construction team developed and adhered to an environmental compliance program that will likely serve as a model for the rest of the industry moving forward. Sustainable features include daylight harvesting, green roofs, stormwater harvesting, and reuse and re-development of an existing tidal stream located within the site. Additionally, because the academy was constructed on a former brownfield site, the project featured a stringent environmental compliance component.
